Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health.

Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved; and physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy.

Modern massage techniques can be traced back to the 1700s and the development of Swedish massage, the first systematic method of therapeutic massage based on physiology. Today’s Massage Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to combine traditional Swedish and modern Massage Therapy techniques with exercise and other therapies to treat clients.

The benefits of massage can improve overall prenatal health for many pregnant women. Along with the guidance and advice of a prenatal care provider, massage therapy can be incorporated into routine prenatal care as an emotional and physical health supplement shown to improve pregnancy outcome and maternal health. Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – during the first, second, or third trimester. Many facilities will refuse to offer massage to a woman who is still in her first trimester because of the increased risk for miscarriage associated with the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Precautions For Prenatal Massage?

As with any therapeutic approach to pregnancy wellness, women should discuss massage with their prenatal care provider. The best way to address the risks of prenatal massage is to be informed and to work together with knowledgeable professionals.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Using a soft touch practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it's effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

**How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?**
The central nervous system’s influence over the body's ability to function properly is heavily influenced by the craniosacral system - the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. On an every day basis, your body goes through physical, emotional and mental stresses that it must work to compensate for unfortunately causing body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. These then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can block healthy performance of the central nervous system, and risk every other system it interacts with.
These restrictions can be assessed and corrected a CST practitioner uses techniques to assess the craniosacral system to ease the motion and rhythm of the cranial pulse around the brain and spinal cord. Light techniques are then used to alleviate restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system.
By balancing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and supporting the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to relieve a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological damage.
